Wedding Cake at Layer Marney Towers in Essex

If you have read previous blog posts, you will know that I am a bit of a sucker for history and thus it was a real treat to deliver to a venue dating back nearly 500 years.

Layer Marney Tower dates back to 1523. It was originally built in the latter part of King Henry VIII’s reign. Over the centuries it has been owned by various Lords and Ladies but is now home to the Charrington family, who still actually live in the tower itself.

Susan and Robert actually married in the beautiful old church (situation within the Tower grounds), following by drinks and canapés in the Long Gallery and a wedding breakfast in a stunning marquee situation in the courtyard area.

Susan came to us with a relatively simple design. She wanted something quite understated yet elegant and not certainly not over imposing. Susan asked if the icing for the base colour of her cake could be made in the same pinky/peach tone as her bridesmaids’ dresses. This did take quite a few attempts at colour matching but we got there in the end!

To say the design was quite simple is true, but would you believe that those tiny Royal iced dots around the polka dots took one entire day…?! Yes, exactly.

Thankfully the weather on Saturday was kind to Susan and Robert (my goodness, I am so sick and tired of this rain….) and I am told by Mum-in-Law (who just returned the cake stand) that they had a wonderful day and the cake was enjoyed by all.

We have been delivering wedding cakes all over the South of England now for nearly 5 years. We have experienced and dealt with every eventuality that can possibly come with running a wedding cake business, but it seems we still learn something from every delivery – however small.

This weeks lesson…… For very rural venues check if there are cattle grids! Cakes do not like cattle grids (to say the least) and running over one with a very delicate stacked cake on board could completely ruin the cake.

Removing the cake from the car, walking it beyond the cattle grid, to then put it back in the car until the next cattle grid, may have looked crazy to any onlookers but was absolutely necessary…

Congratulations to Susan and Robert. An absolute pleasure to work with you Susan and I am so glad everything went well for you.

Nicola x…
