We have worked on many ‘piped’ or ‘overpiped’ cakes over the last few years but last summer we had the pleasure on creating a piped giant heart cake.
The cake needed to feed up to 200 people so it needed to be quite a size! The cake board you see here measured 1.2m and the actual cake, at its widest point measured 1m.
When you work on a project like this you have to get your measurements right! The old saying of ‘measure twice, cut once’ definitely came into play!
At Hall of Cakes we are very used to working on big grand cakes but usually the are very big and grand in terms of height – no width. So, on this occasion we had to be very mindful of how this giant heart cake was going to fit through doorways. We had to consider how it was going to leave our premises – was there a big enough opening? and how it was going to get into the venue. Again, was there a big enough opening?
Thankfully, on this occasion we were working with a planner – Alice Wilkes Design. A very talented team of planners with a lot of experience. Also, it was fortunate that we had previously worked at the venue – The Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich. So, we knew the venue (and the doorways!) so we had a plan in place.
This giant heart cake was vanilla sponge inside with vanilla bean buttercream and raspberry jam. We were baking for a couple of days before we even thought of the icing and piping. The cake was the work of two people for a whole week.
The piping was done in Royal Icing. Wendy is our resident expert in this particular piping technique. Whilst Wendy loves piping a cake like this, her hands were certainly aching by the end of it!
